President Mahama makes key appointments to COCOBOD, GRA, National Security


Dr. Ransford Abbey – Interim Chief Executive of COCOBOD

The President has announced additional appointments to the leadership of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Security Council Secretariat.

Effective Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Dr. Ransford Abbey, a well-known football administrator and media personality, has been appointed as the acting Chief Executive of COCOBOD, while Anthony Kwasi Sarpong will serve as the acting Commissioner-General of the GRA.

Retired Commissioner of Police, Dr. Benjamin Agordzor, has been assigned to the National Security Council Secretariat to oversee Human Resource matters.

Mr. Sarpong, the new acting Commissioner-General, is the Senior Partner at KPMG Ghana.

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong – Acting Commissioner-General, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)
Until his appointment as Senior Partner in June 2019, Mr. Sarpong served as a Partner and Head of Audit at KPMG Ghana. He also led KPMG’s Financial Services line of business while acting as the Risk Management Partner.

A Chartered Accountant with over 21 years of experience, Mr. Sarpong specializes in audit and advisory services across sectors such as Financial Services, Consumer and Industrial Markets, and Telecom, Media, and Technology. He has managed some of the firm's largest and most complex projects.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG); the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN); and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA).

Mr. Sarpong also serves on the University of Ghana Business School Advisory Board and holds leadership roles in various organizations, including St. Teresa's Old Boys' Association (STOBA), Mary Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Parish Education Endowment Fund, and ENACTUS Ghana.

His educational credentials include an MSc in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, a Post-graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester, and a First-Class Honours degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana. He also holds professional certificates in Taxation and Investment and Securities.


Dr. Ransford Abbey – Acting Chief Executive, Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD)
Dr. Abbey brings over 20 years of media experience, spanning radio and television, to his new role. He recently retired from Metro TV, where he hosted the flagship Good Morning Ghana show for nearly 25 years. Before that, he worked with Radio Gold and Choice FM.

In football administration, Dr. Abbey's journey began with Accra Hearts of Oak, where he served as Head of Public Relations and later joined the management team. He also became a member of the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Committee in 2006 and played key roles in national team management. Under his leadership, the Black Meteors won gold at the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique.

An alumnus of Accra Academy, Dr. Abbey holds certifications in Human Resource Management and Public Administration from GIMPA, an advanced certificate in Public Relations from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA).


Dr. Benjamin Agordzor – National Security Council Secretariat (Human Resources)
With over 26 years of experience in policing, Dr. Agordzor has expertise in investigations, training, HR development, and operations. He is also an international trainer, lecturer, and consultant, with peacekeeping experience in Sudan and Somalia.

Dr. Agordzor holds an MPhil from Norsk Laererakademi in Norway and a PhD in Human Rights and Politics from the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy. His PhD research focused on peacekeeping, peace-building, and security sector reforms, particularly in areas like the Rule of Law and Women, Peace, and Security.

He previously served as the Director of Operations at the Ghana Police Headquarters, where he played a pivotal role in planning security operations for the 2016 elections.
